Electricity consumers across Pakistan may face an increase in power prices under the August fuel adjustment.
The proposed increase could affect consumers in Karachi and other parts of the country. The request is linked to the monthly fuel adjustment mechanism.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a tariff adjustment request. It has sought an increase of Rs1.73 per unit in electricity prices.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) will review the request. The regulator is scheduled to hear the case on September 29.
If approved, the proposed increase could also apply to K-Electric consumers. The final decision will depend on NEPRA’s review.
According to CPPA data, distribution companies received 14.464 billion units during August. The average generation cost was recorded at Rs8.82 per unit.
Hydropower remained the largest source of electricity generation during the month. It accounted for 37.84 percent of total generation.
Local coal contributed 10.88 percent to electricity generation. Imported coal accounted for another 15.59 percent during August.
The data also showed contributions from other fuel sources. Furnace oil accounted for 2.15 percent of total electricity generation.
Local gas contributed 7.04 percent during the month. Imported liquefied natural gas, or LNG, accounted for 8.48 percent.
CPPA data also highlighted the cost of electricity generated from different fuels. Furnace oil-based generation cost Rs45.25 per unit.
Electricity generated from imported LNG cost Rs45.92 per unit. These figures were recorded during August.
The fuel adjustment mechanism is used to reflect changes in generation costs. These costs can vary depending on fuel prices and the generation mix.
The proposed tariff adjustment will now undergo regulatory scrutiny. NEPRA will examine the figures submitted by CPPA before making its decision.
Consumers will have to wait for the regulator’s final ruling. The increase is not final until NEPRA approves the requested adjustment.
The decision could affect electricity bills for eligible consumers across Pakistan. K-Electric customers could also be included if the adjustment is approved.
The hearing on September 29 will provide further clarity. NEPRA’s decision will determine whether the proposed increase takes effect.
Until then, the requested Rs1.73 per unit increase remains a proposal. Consumers will be able to know the final impact after the regulatory process concludes.
