Authorities in Murree have introduced new crowd-control measures ahead of the August 14 Independence Day holiday rush.
Section 144 has been imposed across key parts of the hill station. The restrictions apply from August 10 to August 16, 2026.
The measures particularly affect Murree Mall Road and GPO Chowk. These areas usually attract large crowds during national holidays.
Under the new arrangements, tourist families will be allowed to enter these busy locations. Individuals and groups arriving without families could face restrictions at designated checkpoints.
Why Have Restrictions Been Imposed?
Thousands of tourists traditionally travel to Murree during the Independence Day holiday period.
Authorities expect another major influx this year. Heavy traffic and overcrowding are likely around the city’s busiest tourist areas.
Deputy Commissioner Murree Agha Zaheer Abbas Shirazi issued the notification following recommendations from the District Police Officer.
Officials said the measures are intended to maintain law and order. They are also designed to manage tourist movement and reduce traffic congestion.
The restrictions do not mean Murree has been closed to tourists.
Other Tourist Attractions Remain Accessible
Visitors can still travel to other popular destinations around the hill station.
These include Patriata and Kashmir Point, along with scenic viewpoints and chairlift facilities.
These locations could provide alternatives for visitors seeking to avoid crowds around Murree Mall Road and GPO Chowk.
Tourists should still prepare for heavy traffic across the wider area.
Traffic Delays Expected During August 14 Rush
Authorities expect increased traffic on the Islamabad-Murree Expressway (N-75) and Rawalpindi-Murree Road.
Thousands of vehicles could travel toward the hill station during the Independence Day period.
Motorists should therefore prepare for queues, checkpoints and possible delays.
Visitors should also keep valid identification and vehicle documents with them.
Police may conduct checks at barriers, particularly on routes leading toward restricted areas.
Keeping CNICs and vehicle documents readily available could help avoid unnecessary delays.
Parking Around Mall Road Could Be Difficult
Visitors have also been advised to avoid parking along main roads and narrow streets near GPO Chowk.
Roadside parking can worsen congestion when traffic levels are already high.
Tourists should use designated public parking facilities where possible. They can then walk or use available local transport services.
The restrictions on Murree Mall Road will remain part of the wider Independence Day crowd-management arrangements until August 16.
