The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has launched a new initiative aimed at collecting revenue and tax data from marriage halls across Karachi. This effort is part of a broader campaign to enhance tax compliance within the city’s wedding industry.
On Thursday, FBR officials, including assistant commissioners from Regional Tax Offices (RTO) I and II, conducted surprise inspections at several marriage halls in District East. The visits focused on halls located in key areas such as Shahra-e-Faisal, Nursery, PECHS, and Gulshan-e-Iqbal. During these inspections, the officials gathered records of events held throughout the year and payments received by the halls.

An assistant commissioner stated that withholding tax receipts were also being collected from the hall owners, alongside detailed records of all ceremonies. This data will later be submitted to the chief commissioners for further review. The FBR audit teams are expected to scrutinize the financial records of marriage halls citywide to ensure proper tax filings based on their income from these events.
The sudden visits have left many marriage hall owners uneasy, with some contemplating approaching the revenue board chairman to address their concerns over the inspections.
