Punjab Govt Rolls Out Free Transport in Lahore for Basant Festival

LAHORE – The Punjab govt has announced that buses and rickshaws will run free of charge in Lahore on February 6, 7, and 8 during Basant celebrations. The move aims to reduce the use of motorcycles and prevent road accidents amid festival activities.

Provincial Information Minister Azma Bokhari said the free transport initiative is part of broader safety measures during Basant. The Punjab govt is also considering limited kite manufacturing starting December 30, under strict regulations.

Only cotton-based threads will be allowed for kite strings, and the use of metallic or chemically treated strings remains strictly prohibited. Each kite manufacturer, seller, and supplier must register with the respective Deputy Commissioner. Violations may result in registration cancellation, heavy fines, or imprisonment.

The minister added that anyone caught flying or selling kites without official permission will face severe penalties, including long-term imprisonment. The use of more than nine strands in kite strings is banned to minimize risks of injuries and accidents.

A civil society representative noted that holding a safe and regulated Basant could generate employment opportunities and promote tourism in Lahore. In line with this, the Walled City Authority has been instructed to conduct a public survey to gather citizens’ opinions on organizing a secure Basant event.

The Punjab govt emphasized that these steps are part of a coordinated plan to ensure a safe and enjoyable Basant festival. Authorities aim to balance tradition with public safety while allowing controlled festivities.

Officials said strict enforcement and monitoring will be in place throughout the festival. Free public transport, regulated kite-flying, and citizen engagement are intended to reduce risks and maintain order.
