Gas Supply to Remain Suspended in Several Karachi Areas Amid Maintenance Work

Residents in several parts of Karachi are expected to face temporary disruption in Gas supply as Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) prepares to carry out pipeline work near the NIPA flyover.

According to reports, the shutdown is being conducted at the request of TransKarachi due to ongoing work on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route. This will be the second consecutive week of temporary suspension linked to the same project.

SSGC said the work involves lowering a 20-inch high-pressure pipeline located along the BRT corridor near the NIPA flyover. The operation is scheduled to take place during the night between May 23 and May 24.

Officials stated that the company plans to complete the work during regular load-shedding hours from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM. However, due to the technical complexity of the project, the Gas shutdown may continue until 8:00 AM.

During this period, several major residential and commercial areas are expected to experience low pressure or complete suspension of Gas supply. Authorities advised consumers to make necessary arrangements before the shutdown begins.

The affected areas include all blocks of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, PIB Colony, Jamshed Road, Lines Area, PECHS, and Saddar. Important institutions are also likely to be impacted during the temporary closure.

Among the major facilities expected to face disruption are Liaquat National Hospital, Aga Khan University Hospital, and Karachi Central Prison. These institutions may experience interruptions in Gas services until the maintenance work is completed.

SSGC assured consumers that updates would be shared immediately after the work is finished. The company said Gas supply will be restored as soon as the pipeline adjustment process is safely completed.

Meanwhile, Karachi residents continue to face routine Gas load-shedding in different parts of the city. According to the existing schedule, supply remains suspended from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Another shutdown period is also observed from 10:00 PM until 6:00 AM the following morning. Many residents have expressed concerns over increasing disruptions, especially during cooking hours and daily household activities.

The latest shutdown is part of ongoing infrastructure work linked to the BRT project. Authorities said the pipeline adjustment is necessary to support future transport development in Karachi while ensuring the safety of underground utility lines.
