Government Forms Task Forces To Ensure Relief To Farmers

The government has decided to form three task forces to provide relief to farmers and strengthen the country’s agricultural resilience against climate change. The decision was made during the first meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Agriculture and Climate/Flood Emergencies, chaired by Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal.

The committee was established by the Prime Minister with Ahsan Iqbal as its convener. The meeting focused on strategies to support farmers affected by recent floods and ensure timely preparation for the upcoming Rabi season.

Minister Ahsan Iqbal said that giving both short-term and long-term relief to farmers is the government’s top priority. He urged provincial governments to work closely with federal authorities to compensate affected farmers and ensure the supply of seeds, especially canola, within the next 15 days. He shared that a 5,000-acre canola seed pilot project has already started in Narowal through corporate sponsorship.

The minister also encouraged diversification toward high-value crops like canola, which can provide better income opportunities for farmers. He highlighted the need for interest-free loans and the development of private insurance systems to protect the agriculture sector from climate-related shocks.

The newly formed task forces will submit reports within 15 days covering three areas: (i) immediate agricultural relief and provision of seeds, (ii) climate change impacts and resilience strategies, and (iii) strengthening climate-resilient infrastructure. These reports will be presented to the Prime Minister for review.

Ahsan Iqbal emphasized that climate change is now a permanent challenge that demands long-term planning for food security and sustainable agricultural growth. Member Infrastructure Waqas Anwar briefed that the committee aims to create a comprehensive support package offering immediate relief to farmers and long-term stability in the agriculture sector.

Federal ministers for climate change, power, housing, and provincial representatives also attended the meeting.
