The federal government has cancelled the Licenses of 50 pilots following allegations involving fake pilot credentials.
Authorities have also suspended the licenses of another 33 pilots as part of regulatory action. The Ministry of Defence provided details in a written response during Friday’s Question Hour.
According to the ministry, authorities took the action under the Civil Aviation Rules, 1994.
The development follows years of controversy surrounding allegations about questionable pilot credentials in Pakistan’s aviation sector.
50 Pilot Licenses Cancelled
The government said the Licenses of 50 pilots were cancelled after regulatory proceedings. Another 33 pilots had their licenses suspended, according to the ministry’s written response.
The controversy had significant consequences for Pakistan’s aviation industry, particularly Pakistan International Airlines. International authorities imposed flight restrictions on PIA following concerns linked to the pilot licensing controversy.
The restrictions affected the airline’s ability to operate flights to several important international destinations.
PIA Lost Rs. 200 Billion in Revenue
According to the Ministry of Defence, the restrictions caused major financial losses for the national airline.
The ministry said PIA lost around Rs. 200 billion in revenue between August 2020 and December 2024. Restrictions were imposed by authorities in the United Kingdom, European Union and United States.
PIA also lost access to the United Kingdom market during the restrictions.The ministry described the UK as PIA’s most profitable international market.
Losing access meant the airline could not fully benefit from passenger demand on important UK routes.
Competitors Benefited From PIA’s Absence
The government said several international airlines benefited while PIA remained restricted from the market.
These included Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. Passengers who might otherwise have travelled with PIA had to consider alternative airlines on affected routes.
The restrictions therefore had both financial and competitive consequences for Pakistan’s national carrier.
Cabinet Committee Formed to Examine Matter
The federal government has also formed a cabinet committee to examine the issue.
According to the written response, the defence minister will head the committee. The committee is expected to review matters surrounding the controversy and its impact on Pakistan’s aviation sector.
The cancellation and suspension of pilot Licenses represent significant regulatory action following the allegations. The issue also highlights the wider financial consequences that aviation-related concerns can create for national carriers.
