Govt Considers Rs100 Petrol Subsidy for Motorcyclists

The federal government is exploring a major relief initiative aimed at supporting low-income motorcyclists following an unprecedented increase in petroleum prices across Pakistan. Authorities are reviewing a proposal to provide a Rs100 per litre petrol subsidy, targeting only deserving individuals rather than extending relief to all motorcycle owners.

Advisor to the Finance Minister Khurram Shehzad confirmed that the proposed subsidy is still under consideration and would be designed carefully to ensure financial assistance reaches those most affected by rising fuel costs. He clarified that the relief package would remain limited and would not apply universally to every motorcyclist in the country.

Speaking to a private television channel, Shehzad explained that modern technology would help identify eligible beneficiaries. A dedicated mobile application is being considered to verify motorcycle registrations, while beneficiary data from the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) will be used to assess financial eligibility and prevent misuse of funds.

Provincial governments have also contributed to discussions by offering access to detailed motorbike ownership records maintained within their databases. Officials believe integrating provincial registration data with federal welfare information can create a transparent and efficient subsidy distribution system.

Authorities indicated that owners of expensive or heavy motorcycles are unlikely to qualify for the subsidy, as they are considered financially capable of managing higher fuel expenses. The relief is primarily intended for daily wage earners and lower-income commuters who depend on motorcycles as their main mode of transportation.

Khurram Shehzad noted that petroleum prices have risen sharply worldwide, with some countries experiencing increases between 70 and 80 percent. He said Pakistan has attempted to adopt a cautious approach toward fuel price adjustments despite significant global market pressures.

The subsidy proposal follows a massive fuel price hike announced by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik alongside Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. Petrol prices increased from Rs321.17 to Rs458 per litre, reflecting a rise of Rs137, while diesel surged from Rs335.86 to Rs520 per litre, an increase of Rs184.49.

During the press conference, Malik thanked President Asif Ali Zardari, provincial leadership, and coalition partners for their support, describing the situation as a critical economic challenge driven largely by global oil price trends.
