Lahore-Islamabad GT Road and Key Routes Sealed Amid Protest Fears

In a major security move, Punjab authorities have completely sealed GT Road near Kala Shah Kaku, disrupting the main highway connection between Lahore and Islamabad. The decision came amid reports of a possible protest march by a political-religious group.

According to officials, the routes sealed around Kala Shah Kaku were aimed at preventing the protesters from entering major cities. Participants of the march reportedly spent the night at Shahdara Bridge, nearly 12 to 15 kilometers away, and were expected to move toward Kala Shah Kaku during the day.

Heavy security arrangements have been made across several districts. Police, Rangers, and other law enforcement personnel have been deployed to maintain peace and order. Containers have been placed on both sides of GT Road, while movement between Lahore, Gujranwala, and nearby areas remains severely affected.

Commuters, travelers, and students faced major inconvenience due to the blocked routes. Long traffic jams were reported, and many vehicles were diverted toward alternate roads. Authorities said the measures were temporary and taken to ensure public safety.

In some areas, including Jhelum and Kharian, the situation appeared even more intense. Officials confirmed that trenches β€” around 30 feet deep and 20 feet wide β€” were dug on GT Road and near bridges over the Jhelum River. Trucks and other heavy vehicles were parked strategically to block entry points, with police monitoring the area around the clock.

With routes sealed across several districts, traffic between Punjab’s key cities remains disrupted. The provincial administration continues to assess the situation, emphasizing that the steps are necessary to prevent any potential unrest and maintain law and order.
