Gujranwala’s Mass Transit Project Approved, Featuring A 31.5 km Route With 24 Bus Stations

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the design of the Gujranwala Mass Transit System, marking a major step toward modern urban transport in the city. The project aims to improve mobility and reduce traffic pressure.

The planned Mass Transit System will cover a 31.5-kilometre route from Gakkhar to Eminabad. It will include 24 modern stations designed to international standards. Officials say it will offer safe, fast, and affordable travel for citizens.

The project also includes underground sections. Around 17 to 19 kilometres of the route will be built below ground. Two tunnel segments will further improve traffic flow and system efficiency.

A feeder bus network will connect all areas of Gujranwala to the Mass Transit System. This will ensure wider access and reduce transport gaps across the city.

Authorities said the system will be powered by smart technology. A central command and control centre will monitor operations in real time. This will help improve safety and coordination.

Every station and depot in the Mass Transit System will use solar energy. This makes the project environmentally friendly and energy efficient. Officials said this step supports sustainable urban development.

Depots will be built in Gakhar, Chen Da Qila, and Gondlanwala. These facilities will help manage operations and maintenance across the network.

The project also includes a 62-kilometre drainage system along the route. This will help manage rainwater and reduce flooding risks in urban areas.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif described the Mass Transit System as a “game changer” for Gujranwala. She said it will modernize transport and improve daily life for residents.

Officials believe the system will reduce traffic congestion and travel time. It is also expected to support economic activity in the region.

The Mass Transit System is scheduled for completion within 12 months. Authorities aim to deliver a fully integrated and efficient transport network for the growing population.

Overall, the project is seen as a major investment in urban infrastructure. It reflects a shift toward modern, sustainable, and connected public transport in Punjab.
