The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast heavy rain and thunderstorms on Ashura (July 6), with widespread rainfall expected across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
According to the advisory, intense rainfall may affect major cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Peshawar, and Nowshera. These areas are at risk of urban flooding, especially in low-lying parts.
The PMD warned that these weather conditions could disrupt Ashura processions and urged citizens to take precautionary measures. The Met Office has advised the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins and avoid unnecessary travel during downpours.
Meanwhile, Sindh and Balochistan will remain largely hot and humid. However, Karachi and Hyderabad may experience light rain or drizzle, particularly during the early morning and night hours.
Flash Flood and GLOF Alerts Issued
The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) under the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flash flood alert from July 6 to July 10, citing active monsoon conditions combined with a westerly wave.
Northern areas such as Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, and Astore may face flash floods and landslides, especially between July 7 and 12. Moderate to heavy rainfall is also forecast in Azad Jammu & Kashmir, including Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Rawalakot, and Bagh.
In addition, the PMD has issued a GLOF (Glacial Lake Outburst Flood) warning for mountain regions. Continuous rain and rising temperatures have increased the risk of sudden glacial lake discharges. Such outbursts can be dangerous, leading to fast-moving floods that damage roads, homes, and vital infrastructure.
Residents near glacial zones, including riverbanks and streams, have been urged to stay alert, avoid risky areas, and refrain from driving through floodwaters.
Authorities are monitoring the situation and may issue more updates as conditions develop. Public safety remains the top priority during this critical monsoon period.
