Torrential Rain Disrupts Traffic, Floods Streets in Twin Cities

Torrential Rain Disrupts Traffic, Floods Streets in Twin Cities

Heavy rainfall continued across Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Friday, causing flooding in several low-lying areas and disrupting daily life. Authorities remained on high alert as water levels increased in Nullah Lai and emergency teams were deployed across vulnerable locations.

The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) said its staff and rescue teams were working around the clock to manage the situation. Officials confirmed that emergency measures had been activated to deal with urban flooding and drainage issues.

According to the WASA Director General, different areas received varying amounts of rain during the latest spell. Saidpur recorded 31mm of rainfall, while Golra received 40mm.

Bokra recorded 17mm, Shamsabad received 13mm, and New Katarian recorded 17mm. These rainfall totals contributed to widespread water accumulation in several parts of the twin cities.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that Rawalpindi received more than 50mm of rain. The continued Heavy rainfall caused rainwater to enter homes in several low-lying neighborhoods.

Residents in affected areas faced difficulties as streets and roads remained flooded. Water also entered residential properties, creating challenges for families living in vulnerable localities.

Traffic movement was disrupted at several major points. Water accumulated at Islamabad’s Seventh Avenue underpass and Rawalpindi’s Jinnah Park underpass, slowing the movement of vehicles during peak hours.

Authorities closely monitored the rising water level in Nullah Lai, which carries rainwater from Islamabad and Rawalpindi toward the Soan River.

At Gawalmandi, the water level reached seven feet, increasing concerns for nearby residential areas. At Katarian, the level climbed further to 7.5 feet, prompting officials to continue monitoring the situation.

WASA Managing Director said rescue workers and agency staff had been deployed to flood-prone locations. Their main focus is to remove standing water and assist residents affected by the rainfall.

Rainwater was reported in several areas, including Afandi Colony, Dhoke Kala Khan, Shakrial, Fauji Colony, and Magha Singh Estate. Many streets remained submerged, making travel difficult for local residents.

Authorities also stationed heavy machinery in sensitive areas to speed up drainage operations. Pumps and emergency equipment were placed in low-lying locations to reduce the risk of further flooding.

Officials urged residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel through flooded roads. Emergency teams continue to monitor weather conditions and respond to public complaints.
