The government has introduced a new digital system to simplify electricity subsidy distribution through a QR Code printed on electricity bills. The initiative is aimed at helping deserving consumers receive relief through a transparent and easy online verification process.
Under the new system, households consuming up to 200 electricity units per month can now access subsidies by scanning a QR Code available on their monthly bills. The program is part of the federal Cross-Subsidy Program 2026, which focuses on improving transparency and reducing misuse of subsidy benefits.
Officials from the Power Division said the new mechanism has been launched to ensure that financial assistance reaches genuinely eligible consumers. Authorities believe the digital process will help stop fraudulent practices, including obtaining subsidies through multiple electricity connections within a single household.
The subsidy program mainly targets low-income households, daily wage earners, and beneficiaries of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). Consumers meeting the eligibility criteria can complete the entire process digitally without lengthy paperwork.
To apply, consumers must scan the QR Code printed on their electricity bill using a smartphone. The code directs users to an official government portal where they are asked to enter their 14-digit reference number and CNIC details.
After entering the information, users receive a one-time password (OTP) for verification. Once the verification process is completed, eligible consumers can register successfully for the subsidy program.
Officials advised consumers to ensure that the name on the electricity bill matches the details on their CNIC. Authorities warned that incorrect or mismatched information could delay the subsidy approval process.
The government has also established facilitation desks and help camps for people who do not have smartphones or are unfamiliar with digital systems. These support centers have been set up at district administration offices and union councils across the country.
Staff at these centers will assist citizens in completing the registration process and guide them through the digital verification system. Authorities said the goal is to make the subsidy process accessible to everyone, including those living in remote areas.
In addition to scanning the QR Code, consumers can also register manually through the official Cross-Subsidy Program portal if QR scanning is not possible. Officials said both methods are fully connected to the same digital verification system.
The government believes the new digital approach will improve efficiency and reduce corruption in subsidy distribution. Authorities added that the system will help ensure relief reaches households that genuinely need financial support.
