A hotel near Attabad Lake in Hunza has been fined Rs1.5 million and had several rooms sealed following a viral video by British vlogger George Buckley, alleging the resort was discharging sewage into the lake.
Buckley’s video highlighted a foul smell and brown water near the resort, which he attributed to pollution, sparking widespread concern and prompting an official inspection.

Authorities found damaged manholes and ordered the hotel to upgrade its sewage system within a week.
In response, the hotel—Luxus Hunza—denied the claims, citing natural glacial silt and runoff as the cause of the water’s appearance. They defended their environmental practices and insisted their waste system is fully compliant.
Buckley, however, challenged the hotel’s explanation, stating the smell at the site clearly indicated sewage and demanded updated environmental reports.
