In a significant development, incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan is expected to be shifted to hospital today for treatment of his deteriorating eye condition. An ambulance, accompanied by a team of medical professionals, arrived at Adiala Jail to conduct an initial assessment.
Jail sources confirmed that the preliminary medical check-up is underway. Specialists, including eye surgeons, will evaluate his condition before deciding whether he will be officially shifted to hospital for further treatment. Reports indicate that Imran Khan has lost nearly 85 percent of vision in his right eye, raising urgency for medical attention.
Medical Assessment and Court Directives
According to sources, an initial medical report detailing his vital signsโblood pressure, pulse, temperature, and blood sugarโhas been sent to the Punjab Home Department. The report also includes an evaluation of his eye condition.
The move to have him shifted to hospital follows Supreme Court directives, which mandated a thorough medical examination and treatment for the PTI founder. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry stated that a medical board has been constituted to supervise his care at Al-Shifa Eye Hospital.
Chaudhry added that the government has facilitated phone contact between Imran Khan and his sons, urging that his health issues should not be politicised. He called on PTI leaders to avoid propaganda and emphasised that providing proper medical facilities to prisoners is a state responsibility.
Legal Context
Imran Khan has filed four applications in the Islamabad High Court (IHC), requesting bail and suspension of his sentence on medical grounds in the Toshakhana-II and ยฃ190 million Al-Qadir Trust cases. He claims political victimisation and cited his health condition as a reason for urgent medical care.
Authorities continue to monitor his condition closely, and the decision to fully transfer him to the hospital will be made after completing the medical assessment. Observers say the move reflects compliance with legal directives and the stateโs responsibility to ensure proper healthcare for prisoners.
The PTI founderโs transfer to hospital will allow specialists to provide timely treatment and prevent further deterioration of his vision, highlighting the seriousness of his medical situation.
