Imran Khan Taken To PIMS For Second Eye Procedure Amid Heavy Security

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan was taken to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in the early hours of February 24. The visit was for a scheduled follow-up eye treatment, according to hospital officials.

In a statement, the hospital administration confirmed that the 74-year-old received a second dose of an intravitreal injection. The procedure was carried out as part of a day-care surgical plan. Doctors administered the injection directly into the affected eye to control further damage. A third and final dose of the eye treatment is scheduled for March 23.

Before the procedure, security around the government hospital was tightened. Officials described the visit as a closely monitored medical event. A board of medical specialists examined his eye in detail before proceeding. The injection was given inside an operation theatre under strict medical guidelines.

Hospital authorities said the procedure lasted nearly an hour. It was completed without complications. His vital signs remained stable throughout the process. Doctors discharged him the same day after observation.

Along with the eye treatment, his heart health was also reviewed. A consultant cardiologist performed an echocardiogram and an electrocardiogram (ECG). Both tests reportedly showed normal heart function. Officials stated that there were no signs of cardiac concerns during the evaluation.

After completing the medical process, he was returned to Adiala Jail. He was provided with follow-up instructions and medical documents.

According to a report submitted to the Supreme Court of Pakistan, his lawyer Barrister Salman Safdar confirmed that Khan has been diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). CRVO is a serious eye condition that can threaten vision. It occurs when the main vein that drains blood from the retina becomes blocked.

Medical experts link CRVO to conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Doctors are using intravitreal injections as part of his ongoing eye treatment plan to manage this condition.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) raised concerns over the hospitalโ€™s brief statement. The party said the short press release lacked detailed medical information. PTI has demanded access for Khanโ€™s personal doctors and family members. The party also called for greater transparency regarding his treatment while in custody.

The latest medical visit has added to the political tensions surrounding the former prime minister. However, hospital officials maintain that the eye treatment was conducted according to standard medical protocols and that his overall condition remains stable.
