Inquiry Dismisses SP Adeel Akbar’s Death As Suicide; What’s The Backstory?

The inquiry committee investigating the death of SP Adeel Akbar has found no evidence suggesting suicide, according to sources cited by ARY News on Thursday. The three-member committee was led by DIG Muhammad Haroon Joya, with DIG Atiq Tahir and DIG Operations Jawad Tariq as members.

The committee finalized its report after reviewing postmortem findings and recording statements from SP Akbar’s driver, wireless operator, and other staff members. The postmortem report confirmed that SP Adeel Akbar died from a gunshot wound to the face. However, investigators could not determine if the wound was self-inflicted.

As part of the inquiry, the team also recorded a psychologist’s statement to evaluate the officer’s mental health. It was disclosed that SP Akbar had visited his doctor twice in the days leading up to his death.

Sources told ARY News that the committee’s findings will be submitted to Inspector General (IG) Islamabad Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi. The IG is expected to forward the report, along with his recommendations, to Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for further review and necessary action.

Earlier, a postmortem conducted at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) confirmed that the officer was struck by a single bullet fired from the front. The nature of the incident—whether accidental or intentional—remains unclear.

Reports suggest that SP Adeel Akbar had been struggling with depression linked to work-related stress. He had recently sought psychiatric help and was accompanied by his wife and daughter during consultations. Additionally, he was diagnosed with dengue fever just one day before his death. His psychiatrist had advised him to continue his medication and stay calm, citing his increasing frustration with official duties.

The case has raised concerns within police circles, prompting calls for greater attention to mental health support for law enforcement officers dealing with high-pressure assignments.
