Inquiry Launched After Viral Video of University Students Using Drugs

Sindh’s caretaker health minister has initiated an inquiry into a widely circulated video allegedly depicting three individuals engaging in illicit drug use on the premises of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS).

The vice chancellor of the university has been instructed to lead the investigation and furnish a report within a five-day timeframe.

The video, which has garnered attention on television channels as well, purportedly shows two female and one male student smoking illicit substances in a DUHS cafeteria. Expressing deep concern, Health Minister Dr. Saad Khalid Niaz emphasized that such behavior tarnishes the reputation of medical professionals nationwide, casting a shadow on the esteemed integrity of the profession.

Dr. Niaz remarked, “Observing such actions reflects negatively on the medical community as a whole. The occurrence of such behavior at Dow, recognized as one of Pakistan’s premier institutions, is particularly alarming and necessitates immediate intervention.”

In response, a spokesperson from DUHS confirmed that the university is investigating the incident and will take appropriate measures upon the completion of the inquiry. He added that the university may seek assistance from law enforcement agencies if required.

It is noteworthy that the provincial government had recently imposed a ban on the use of sheesha and e-cigarettes (vape) in public spaces. Authorities have been instructed to enforce the Prohibition of Smoking and Protection of Non-Smokers Health Ordinance 2002.
