‘You Can’t Silence Me with PECA’ — Irshad Bhatti Hits Back at Punjab Govt

Journalist and vlogger Irshad Bhatti has responded strongly to the Punjab government after it rejected claims made in a recent report regarding alleged spending on official residences and government infrastructure.

The controversy emerged after Irshad Bhatti discussed figures presented in an investigative report originally aired by journalist Anwar Hussain Samra on a private television channel. Bhatti said he was not the source of the allegations and had only referred to information already made public through the report.

According to Bhatti, instead of addressing the television channel that broadcast the investigation, the government chose to respond directly to him through social media and legal warnings.

Speaking on the matter, Bhatti said he was not concerned about possible legal action. He stated that if authorities wanted to pursue the matter in court, they were free to do so. He also criticized the use of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) against journalists and commentators who question those in power.

Irshad Bhatti maintained that intimidation and pressure tactics would not stop him from raising public-interest issues. He said governments and public offices are temporary, while accountability and truth remain important principles in a democratic society.

The debate centers on allegations of significant public spending on official residences and government buildings. According to the investigative report, more than Rs2.2 billion was reportedly allocated for landscaping projects linked to the residences of senior government officials, including the Chief Secretary and the Commissioner.

The report also claimed that approximately Rs2.72 billion had been spent on the renovation of the Punjab Secretariat. Additional spending was allegedly directed toward upgrading water and electricity systems in GOR-1, while billions of rupees were reportedly allocated for the renovation of ministers’ residences.

These figures have become the focus of an ongoing dispute between government representatives and media commentators. The Punjab government has rejected the allegations, while critics continue to demand greater transparency regarding public expenditures.

Bhatti challenged authorities to respond with official documents and evidence rather than issuing denials. He said that if any of the reported figures were incorrect, the government should provide proof and present its version of events.

He also questioned whether such spending could be justified at a time when many Pakistanis are facing economic difficulties, rising inflation, and unemployment. Bhatti argued that public concerns about government spending deserve answers and open discussion.
