Pakistani authorities have imposed significant taxes on registering imported mobile phones, particularly targeting high-end devices. This aggressive taxation has led to a rise in illegal practices, such as phone cloning and IMEI patching. To address this issue, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a warning to consumers to be cautious when purchasing phones.
The PTA’s latest alert emphasizes the importance of buying phones from reputable sellers. They recommend ensuring that the device is new, in its original packaging, includes a warranty, and has a PTA stamp. Additionally, the IMEI numbers on both the box and the device should match.

Consumers are advised to check their phone’s IMEI by visiting the DIRBS website or texting the IMEI number to 8484. If the PTA alerts them about a possible cloned device, they should verify the IMEI by dialing *#06# and comparing it with the number provided in the PTA’s message.
The PTA also urges buyers to submit proof of purchase and FBR tax payment through their complaint portal. They advise against purchasing high-end phones offered at significantly reduced prices or those lacking a warranty to avoid potential issues.
