Ishaq Dar Leads Pakistan’s Engagements at UNSC Sessions in New York

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has arrived in New York to represent Pakistan at the UNSC sessions. Pakistan is currently serving as the President of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of July, and Mr. Dar’s visit marks the beginning of a week-long series of important engagements in New York and Washington.

During his time in New York, Pakistan will host two signature events under its presidency of the UNSC sessions. Upon his arrival, Mr. Dar was welcomed by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad.

Pakistan officially assumed the presidency of the UNSC on July 1, as part of its two-year tenure as a non-permanent member, which started in January 2025. As the President, Pakistan is responsible for guiding discussions and debates on crucial global issues.

On July 18, Mr. Dar will chair an open debate at the UNSC sessions on “Promoting international peace and security through multilateralism and peaceful settlement of disputes.” This session is aimed at encouraging global dialogue on the importance of diplomacy, mediation, and international cooperation to resolve ongoing conflicts. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has been invited to participate in this crucial session.

Later, on July 23, Mr. Dar will preside over another UNSC session focused on the “Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian Question.” Pakistan has consistently supported the two-state solution and the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.

Following this, on July 24, a high-level briefing will take place to strengthen cooperation between the UN and regional organizations like the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Pakistan has been a strong advocate for deeper collaboration between the UN and OIC to tackle regional conflicts and address global security challenges.

Additionally, Mr. Dar is scheduled to attend a conference on the “Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine” alongside key international players such as France and Saudi Arabia.

This high-level participation in the UNSC sessions demonstrates Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and its ongoing support for the Palestinian cause. After his engagements at the UN, Mr. Dar will also travel to Washington for discussions with senior US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Pakistan’s leadership at the UNSC sessions continues to highlight its role in global diplomacy and its dedication to international peace and security.
