The Islamabad district administration has arrested 88 shopkeepers during a crackdown on the use of prohibited polythene bags. Officials also sealed nine shops during the latest enforcement operation.
Authorities confiscated around 313 kilograms of polythene bags during the crackdown. The action is part of ongoing efforts to enforce the capital’s ban on single-use plastic bags. According to the district administration, the operation is being carried out under the 2023 law. The legislation restricts the use of certain single-use plastic products in the capital.
Officials said enforcement teams will continue inspections against businesses violating the ban. Shopkeepers have been directed to stop selling and supplying prohibited polythene bags. Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Irfan Memon said the ban is aimed at reducing pollution and protecting the city’s environment. He stressed the need for businesses and residents to support the initiative.
Memon said plastic bags can remain in the environment for a long time after being discarded. Their waste can also reach waterways and create problems in different parts of the city. Discarded plastic bags can block drains and contribute to sanitation issues. Reducing plastic waste could therefore help improve cleanliness and waste management across Islamabad.
The deputy commissioner directed shopkeepers to immediately stop selling prohibited bags. He also encouraged traders to switch to environmentally friendly alternatives. The administration warned that legal action would continue against businesses found violating the ban. Officials said inspections would be carried out in commercial areas across the capital.
Authorities have also urged traders to cooperate with enforcement teams. Residents are being encouraged to avoid buying and using prohibited polythene bags. Officials said public cooperation is important for the effective implementation of the ban. They believe collective efforts can help keep Islamabad cleaner and reduce plastic pollution.
The latest crackdown reflects the administration’s continued focus on environmental regulations. Further inspections and enforcement actions are expected in the coming days.
