The District and Sessions Court in Islamabad on Monday issued perpetual arrest warrants for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders Ali Amin Gandapur and Omar Ayub Khan. The warrants relate to two cases linked to the Azadi March. Both leaders have been declared proclaimed offenders.
Judicial Magistrate Mubashir Hassan Chishti presided over the hearing at the District and Sessions Court. Both Gandapur and Omar Ayub failed to appear in court despite multiple summons. Noting their absence, the court declared them proclaimed offenders and issued arrest warrants against them.
Earlier, the court had directed steps to declare Ali Amin Gandapur a proclaimed offender. Two cases are registered against Gandapur and others at Barakahu police station in connection with the Azadi March.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Monday rejected a petition seeking permission for an immediate meeting with PTI founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan. A two-judge bench, led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan, heard 13 petitions concerning Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi.
The petition for the meeting, filed by senior PTI leader Latif Khosa, was dismissed. The bench observed that such an order could not be passed without first issuing notice to the government. Chief Justice Afridi added that the petition must overcome maintainability objections before any relief could be granted. The Supreme Court then issued a notice to the government to respond on Tuesday.
The Chief Justice also mentioned that the matter related to an order dated August 24, 2023, and noted that the case was no longer maintainable. The Supreme Court further addressed the governmentโs petitions challenging the acquittal of Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the cipher case. A three-judge bench has been ordered to hear the appeals.
Additionally, the court took up Imran Khanโs appeals related to the Official Secrets Act case and the National Accountability Bureau reference concerning Al-Qadir University Trust.
The issuance of arrest warrants against PTI leaders underscores the courtโs strict approach in cases linked to the Azadi March. The legal proceedings continue as both the Islamabad court and the Supreme Court handle high-profile cases involving PTI leaders.
