The District Administration Islamabad has introduced new business operating hours as part of the government’s ongoing austerity measures. The revised schedule came into effect on June 1, 2026, and includes an early market closure policy for commercial areas across the capital.
Under the new rules, markets, retail shops, and shopping malls must close by 8:00 PM every day. Officials said the early market closure initiative is aimed at reducing energy consumption and supporting broader cost-saving efforts.
According to the administration, restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores, and other food-related businesses will be allowed to continue operations until 10:00 PM. Authorities believe this approach balances economic activity with the government’s austerity goals.
The updated timings also apply to marriage halls, marquees, and event venues. These facilities are now required to end all operations by 10:00 PM. Officials said the new restrictions are part of a coordinated effort to promote efficient use of resources.
The early market closure policy does not apply to essential services. Pharmacies, hospitals, petrol pumps, and dairy shops have been exempted from the revised operating hours. These businesses will continue functioning according to their regular schedules.
Several specialized sectors have also been excluded from the restrictions. Sports facilities, call centers, and IT companies serving international clients will remain unaffected. Authorities said these sectors provide critical services and contribute significantly to economic activity.
Government officials emphasized that the measures were designed to minimize disruption while supporting national austerity objectives. They noted that access to healthcare, fuel, food supplies, and key business services will remain uninterrupted.
Business owners and traders are expected to adjust their operations according to the new schedule. Some market representatives have expressed concerns about the impact of early market closure on sales and customer traffic. However, authorities maintain that the policy is necessary under current economic conditions.
The administration said monitoring teams will oversee implementation of the new regulations. Businesses found violating the revised timings may face action under applicable rules.
Officials added that the measures could help reduce electricity consumption during peak evening hours. They believe the policy will contribute to greater efficiency while ensuring that essential sectors continue operating normally.
