Islamabad High Court Orders Immediate Removal of PTA Chairman

Islamabad High Court Orders Immediate Removal of PTA Chairman

ISLAMABAD – The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday directed the immediate removal of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman. The court ruled that his appointment did not comply with legal requirements.

Justice Babar Sattar delivered the verdict in a reserved judgment spanning 99 pages. The ruling came after the court accepted a petition challenging the PTA chairman’s selection process. The petition highlighted procedural flaws and violations of existing laws regarding the appointment.

In its decision, the Islamabad High Court declared the appointment of Hafeez Ur Rehman as “not legally valid.” The court emphasized that the chairman must be removed from office immediately.

To maintain the PTA’s operational continuity, the court instructed that a senior member of the authority should assume the role of acting chairman. This temporary appointment will remain in effect until a legally compliant, permanent chairman is selected.

The IHC ruling underscores the judiciary’s role in ensuring transparency and legality in key government appointments. Legal experts say the judgment sets a precedent for future appointments in federal regulatory bodies.

The Islamabad High Court’s decision has drawn attention from both political circles and the telecommunications sector, where stakeholders await further developments. Observers note that the ruling reinforces the need for strict adherence to legal procedures in public sector appointments.

The PTA plays a crucial role in regulating Pakistan’s telecommunications industry, including mobile networks, internet services, and broadcasting. Ensuring leadership appointments follow the law is essential for institutional integrity and public trust.

With this judgment, the Islamabad High Court has sent a clear message that appointments made outside legal frameworks will not be tolerated, emphasizing accountability and the rule of law in Pakistan.
