The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has disqualified Jamshed Dasti, a Member of the National Assembly (MNA), due to fake academic credentials. The disqualification follows a reference sent by the Speaker of the National Assembly, along with two petitions seeking Dasti’s removal from office.
A three-member ECP bench, led by Nisar Durrani, heard a petition filed by Ameer Akbar, which raised concerns about Dasti’s assets and liabilities. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) member of the ECP questioned whether Dasti possessed any undisclosed property. The petitioner’s lawyer argued that Dasti had listed an FA (Intermediate) qualification in his nomination papers, despite not completing his matriculation. The ECP later found that Dasti had only submitted a matriculation certificate from the Karachi Board, which led the Commission to conclude that he had provided misleading information.
The Election Commission’s decision was made after accepting two petitions against Dasti, one of which was filed by the National Assembly Speaker. The ECP has also directed authorities to initiate legal action against him.
In May, the ECP had decided to authenticate Jamshed Dasti’s academic credentials with the Karachi Education Board. Dasti was elected from NA-175 Muzaffargarh in the previous general elections. His disqualification comes under Articles 62 and 63, as well as Sections 4, 9, and 137 of the Elections Act, 2017.
The legal proceedings against Dasti were initiated by Ameer Akbar, Zulfiqar Dogar, and Sardar Faizul Hassan, who filed the petitions for his disqualification. The ECP’s decision reinforces its commitment to upholding transparency and ensuring the integrity of elected representatives.
The Election Commission also rejected a request from opposition leader Omar Ayub to drop an assets-related case and adjourned the hearing until July 29. The Commission remains focused on addressing matters concerning assets declarations and disqualification cases.
