Jemima Goldsmith has urged the British government to speak out over Imran Khan’s detention in Pakistan. She described his situation as a “human-rights emergency.”
Goldsmith, Khan’s former wife, made the comments in a post on X on Monday. She questioned how long British Prime Minister Andy Burnham would remain silent.
She also addressed Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband in her appeal. Goldsmith urged British officials to publicly press Pakistan over Khan’s treatment.
Goldsmith alleged that Imran Khan has faced prolonged solitary confinement. She also claimed he has been denied regular contact with his family.
According to her statement, Khan has spent three years in isolation. She further alleged that access to books, lawyers and doctors was restricted.
Goldsmith said such conditions could seriously affect Khan’s physical and mental health. She also referred to the United Nations’ Nelson Mandela Rules.
The rules address the use of solitary confinement for prisoners. Goldsmith argued that prolonged isolation raises serious human rights concerns.
She also referred to recent Supreme Court orders concerning Khan’s treatment. According to Goldsmith, the court ordered medical care and access to Khan’s personal doctor.
She said the orders also included regular family meetings. Twice-weekly telephone calls with his sons were also mentioned.
Khan was recently taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad. He underwent a medical examination before returning to Adiala Jail.
His family and lawyers had objected to the transfer. They said the Supreme Court had ordered his transfer to Shifa International Hospital.
Goldsmith argued that the issue should no longer be viewed only as a domestic political matter. She described it as a wider human rights concern.
She also highlighted Imran Khan’s long-standing connections with Britain. Khan studied at the University of Oxford and played cricket in England.
Goldsmith also pointed to his welfare projects in Pakistan. These include the establishment of a cancer hospital and a university.
She said their two sons, Sulaiman and Qasim, are British citizens. According to Goldsmith, they have been unable to meet their father.
She further alleged that the two men had been denied visas. She also claimed they faced threats of arrest if they travelled to Pakistan.
Goldsmith said regular telephone contact between Khan and his sons had also been restricted. She argued that this was despite court directions regarding family communication.
The former wife of Imran Khan said she had repeatedly appealed to the British government. She claimed that private diplomatic efforts had failed to resolve the issue.
Goldsmith therefore called for a public response from British authorities. She urged the Foreign Office to press Pakistan to follow the Supreme Court’s orders.
She also demanded improved medical access and restored family contact for Khan. She called for an end to prolonged solitary confinement.
The British government has not indicated that it will intervene in the matter. Goldsmith’s appeal comes as Khan’s detention continues to attract international attention.
