Jamaat-e-Islami has ended its 33-day sit-in at Lahore’s Chairing Cross, also known as Faisal Chowk.

The protest had been held on Mall Road against the petroleum levy and rising prices. The development was reported on Friday.

No formal announcement was made by the party leadership regarding the end of the sit-in. No new schedule was announced at the protest site.

The move came a day after JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman addressed protesters there. He had joined the participants during the prolonged demonstration.

The sit-in had caused the closure of a major section of Mall Road. The road remained blocked for traffic throughout much of the protest.

After the protest ended, traffic was restored on the important Lahore route. Government machinery later cleared the area and reopened the road.

Party workers reportedly began dismantling the protest camp late Thursday night. They removed the stage, tents and other facilities before leaving the location.

The area was reportedly left unclean after the workers departed. Authorities later worked to clear the road and restore normal traffic movement.

The protest had been part of JI’s wider campaign against the petroleum levy. The party has also raised concerns over rising prices and public economic pressures.

Government and JI representatives held several rounds of talks during the protest. The discussions took place at the party’s headquarters in Mansoorah.

However, the negotiations did not produce an agreement on the party’s main demands. JI had continued its sit-ins while talks with government representatives remained underway.

Earlier reports said JI was demanding the complete abolition of the petroleum levy. The party also sought measures to reduce the burden of fuel prices on consumers.

The party had announced further protest plans as part of its campaign. A train march from Karachi toward Islamabad was scheduled for September 20.
