The joint parliamentary committee on constitutional reforms has resumed talks on the 27th Amendment, with members expressing optimism about reaching a consensus on key provisions. The renewed discussions aim to address long-standing issues related to local government empowerment, resource distribution, and administrative autonomy.
Sources said that the meeting brought together representatives from major political parties, including the PML-N, PPP, and PTI, under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. Participants reviewed proposed clauses and shared recommendations to ensure the amendment strengthens democratic governance across all provinces.
Lawmakers highlighted the need for a transparent and efficient local government framework, enabling municipalities to operate with financial and legislative independence. The 27th Amendment is expected to redefine provincial and local responsibilities, ensuring better public service delivery and accountability.
The committee also discussed the inclusion of mechanisms to protect local representatives from political interference, a point raised by both opposition and coalition members.
Officials familiar with the talks said progress has been made on several technical aspects, though some differences remain over fund allocation and governance oversight. Further sessions are planned in the coming days to finalize language acceptable to all parties.
