ISLAMABAD: The government has approved a major increase in the salaries and benefits of judges in Pakistan’s superior courts. The decision covers Supreme Court and High Court judges.
President Asif Ali Zardari approved the package after a recommendation from the federal government. The revised package includes higher salaries, judicial allowances, medical benefits, and improved post-retirement provisions.
The changes will apply from December 10, 2025. Judges will also receive arrears for the period covered by the revised rates.
Supreme Court Judges Get Higher Salaries
The latest Judges Salaries package increases the basic monthly salary of the Chief Justice of Pakistan to Rs1.55 million.
Other Supreme Court judges will receive Rs1.5 million per month. Their salaries have been aligned with those of judges serving in the Federal Constitutional Court.
The basic monthly salary for Supreme Court judges has also increased by Rs400,000. The revised package provides a substantial rise in their overall monthly compensation.
Judicial Allowance Increased
The judicial allowance has also been increased under the new Judges Salaries package.
Previously, judges received a monthly judicial allowance of Rs1,161,163. This amount has now been raised to Rs1.5 million.
The increase amounts to nearly Rs339,000 per month. The higher allowance will significantly increase the total monthly financial package for Supreme Court judges.
Medical Allowance Approved
The government has also approved a monthly medical allowance of Rs150,000 for Supreme Court judges.
The new benefits include higher basic salaries and judicial allowances. They also cover medical support and improved post-retirement provisions.
These changes will increase the overall compensation available to members of the superior judiciary.
High Court Judges Also Receive Pay Raise
The salary increase also covers High Court judges across the country.
The Chief Justice of a High Court will now receive Rs1.254 million as a basic monthly salary. Other High Court judges will receive Rs1.205 million per month.
Previously, High Court judges received a basic salary of Rs1.095 million. The revised package represents an increase of Rs110,000 per month.
Another provision offers a benefit to judges who serve as Chief Justice for more than two years. They can purchase an official government vehicle at a concessional price.
This benefit will apply upon retirement or promotion to another superior judicial position.
Benefits Extended to Retired Judges
The package also includes provisions for retired judges. Retired judges may receive fees for arbitration cases involving the federal government.
The measure could allow the government to use the experience of retired senior judges in federal arbitration matters.
The revised Judges Salaries package is expected to increase government expenditure. Supporters may view the increase as appropriate compensation for judges handling important constitutional and public-interest matters.
