Karachi has launched a major wastewater treatment project to improve water availability and support industrial needs.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari inaugurated the Haroonabad Treatment Plant-I, also known as TP-1, in Karachi.
The Plant will initially supply 35 million gallons of treated wastewater daily to industries. This will allow around 35 MGD of freshwater to be redirected from industries to households across the city.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah described the project as an important step for Karachi’s water security.
He said the initiative would also support sustainable industrial development and reduce pressure on existing freshwater resources.
Treated Water to Support Karachi Industries
According to Murad Ali Shah, the treated wastewater has already undergone testing.
Officials found the water suitable for industrial use.
Full-scale supply to industries is expected to begin in the coming days.
The project was developed through a public-private partnership model. Under this arrangement, industries will purchase treated water for their operational requirements.
Revenue from these purchases will help cover the project’s operating costs.
The Plant will provide industries with an alternative source of water while preserving freshwater for domestic consumers.
Treatment Capacity Planned to Reach 100 MGD
The Haroonabad project forms part of the wider Greater Karachi Sewerage Plan, commonly known as S-III.
Officials also plan to significantly increase the facility’s treatment capacity. Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said the project’s second phase would add another 65 MGD.
This expansion would increase the total treatment capacity to 100 MGD.
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation says Karachi currently produces around 472 MGD of sewage. However, existing treatment facilities process only about 54 MGD.
The corporation has set a longer-term goal of treating 500 MGD of wastewater by 2030.
Project Aims to Improve Karachi’s Water Security
Murad Ali Shah said the project could help Karachi address several major challenges. These include water shortages, population growth and increasing industrial water demand.
The Plant is also expected to reduce the amount of untreated wastewater entering Karachi’s environment.
The chief minister highlighted other development projects being carried out by the Sindh government. He said public service remained a key priority for the provincial administration.
Several senior officials and representatives attended the inauguration ceremony.
They included PPP Sindh President Nisar Khuhro and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab. Provincial ministers, industry representatives and development partners were also present.
Technical experts and senior government officials also participated in the event.
The project is expected to provide Karachi industries with a more reliable alternative water supply.
