Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, announced on Friday that new routes for electric vehicle (EV) buses will soon operate in Karachi. The initiative aims to improve public transport and provide citizens with affordable and eco-friendly travel options.
The decision was made during a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department, chaired by Sharjeel Inam Memon. Officials also approved adding more double-decker and EV buses to enhance city-wide mobility.
Sharjeel Inam Memon said the first of the new routes will connect Gulshan-e-Iqbal to Tower, starting next week. He added that additional new routes will gradually extend to other districts in Sindh, including Hyderabad, Tando Allahyar, Sukkur, and Shikarpur, after Eid.
โThe new routes are part of our plan to expand the Peoples Bus Service across Sindh and benefit more citizens with reliable and affordable travel,โ the minister said.
Officials from the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) highlighted challenges such as road infrastructure issues affecting bus operations. Sharjeel Memon assured that these challenges would be addressed in coordination with relevant ministries.
He also confirmed that ongoing work on major roads in Karachi will continue on a priority basis to support the smooth functioning of new routes.
In addition, the Sindh Bank, the Sindh Enterprise Development Fund (SEDF), and the SMTA will soon sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to provide financial and operational support for the EV bus expansion.
The introduction of new routes is expected to reduce traffic congestion, promote environmentally friendly travel, and improve public transport access across Sindh. The government emphasized that all projects under the Peoples Bus Service, including these new routes, will be implemented efficiently to meet growing demand.
This development marks a significant step toward modernizing Karachiโs public transport and encouraging sustainable commuting options for residents.
The new routes will gradually integrate into the cityโs transport network, making EV buses a common sight in urban and suburban areas.
These efforts reflect Sindhโs commitment to expanding public transport, reducing pollution, and providing efficient, affordable travel for citizens.
