What Should be the Speed Limit for Vehicles to Avoid E-Challans in Karachi?

KARACHI – Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Karachi, Pir Muhammad Shah, has announced new measures to improve road safety by strictly enforcing the speed limit across major roads in the city.

According to the official statement, motorcycles and light vehicles will be allowed a maximum speed limit of 60 km/h, while heavy vehicles will be restricted to 30 km/h. Shah emphasized that a speed-monitoring system equipped with cameras is being installed to identify and penalize violations in real time.

The DIG revealed that Karachi is moving toward a comprehensive Traffic Management System by next year. The plan includes installing over 11,000 new cameras in phases, beginning January 2026. Currently, nearly 40 percent of the city is covered by the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS), which operates through 1,717 cameras monitoring key areas.

Shah said that the e-challan enforcement mechanism has led to a noticeable decline in road accidents as citizens become more aware of the rules. TRACS is already fully operational in District South, including Shahrah-e-Faisal, and is being expanded to other districts such as Malir, Korangi, East, Kemari, and Central.

He further noted that industrial zones like SITE, Landhi, Korangi, and New Karachi will soon be equipped with cameras, speed limit trackers, and TRACS connectivity. Around 10,000 heavy vehicles are being fitted with GPS trackers for continuous monitoring and enhanced safety.

DIG Shah also appealed to all drivers to follow traffic rules, wear helmets, and ensure their vehicles have proper lights and mirrors. He warned that vehicles violating the speed limit, lacking number plates, or breaking traffic laws will face strict action.

A month-long awareness campaign starting November 8 will educate the public on TRACS and road safety regulations. Shah reiterated that the e-challan system applies to everyone equally, regardless of status β€” and those who follow the law will avoid penalties.
