‘No Talks with Terrorists’: Pak Defence Minister Khawaja Asif Draws Red Line Against TTP

‘No Talks with Terrorists’ Pak Defence Minister Khawaja Asif Draws Red Line Against TTP

ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister of Pakistan Khawaja Asif has drawn a clear red line against hardcore militants like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), sending a strong message that the government will not negotiate with those who target innocent civilians and security forces.

Addressing reporters in Islamabad, Khawaja Asif clarified that Pakistan’s dialogue efforts are directed toward the Taliban government in Afghanistan, not with the TTP. “Let me make it clear, we are in talks with Tehreek-e-Taliban Afghanistan (TTA), not the TTP. We will never negotiate with them,” he said firmly.

His remarks came a day after Pakistan and Afghanistan reached a ceasefire agreement in Qatar, following a week of deadly border clashes triggered by attacks from Taliban fighters on Pakistani army posts. The ceasefire was mediated by Qatar, with support from Turkiye.

Asif, who led Pakistan’s delegation in Doha, described the recent development as constructive and praised both Qatar and Turkiye for their diplomatic efforts. He also dismissed the so-called “leaked” version of the ceasefire agreement circulating online, calling it “completely fake.” The official document, he said, consisted of only four paragraphs.

The next round of high-level talks is scheduled for October 25 in Istanbul, where both sides are expected to finalize the framework for a lasting ceasefire.

The Defence Minister accused the TTP leadership of freely operating from inside Afghanistan. He claimed that their families, residences, and training camps are based across the border, contrary to the Taliban government’s denial.

Khawaja Asif also warned of possible sabotage attempts by the TTP and external actors, including India, stating that Pakistan would inform “friendly nations” if the ceasefire is violated. Concluding his remarks, he said Pakistan extends a “hand of peace, but with eyes wide open,” signaling a cautious yet firm approach toward maintaining regional stability.
