Kia Picanto is no longer available for new bookings in Pakistan after nearly six years in the local market.
Lucky Motor Corporation has discontinued the 1,000cc hatchback and removed it from Kia Pakistan’s current vehicle lineup.
The Picanto entered Pakistan in September 2019. It was introduced to compete in the country’s popular small hatchback segment.
However, the car struggled to build enough sales momentum against established competitors. Lucky Motor Corporation has not yet issued a detailed public statement explaining the decision.
Kia Picanto Bookings Closed in Pakistan
The closure of new bookings effectively brings the model’s local sales and production journey to an end.
When launched, the Kia Picanto offered Pakistani buyers another option in the 1,000cc category. Its automatic transmission attracted some urban motorists, particularly in larger cities.
However, the manual version reportedly struggled to generate similar demand. This limited overall sales volumes and made it harder for the model to strengthen its market position.
Pricing and Competition Created Challenges
The Picanto competed in a segment where Suzuki already had a strong presence.
Pakistani hatchback buyers often consider several factors before making a purchase. These include price, fuel economy, resale value, maintenance costs and spare-parts availability.
The Picanto faced criticism over its resale value and maintenance-related costs. Pricing also became an important challenge.
Reports indicate that its ex-factory price increased over time. This made competition harder in a highly price-sensitive category. Meanwhile, consumer preferences were also changing.
SUVs and crossovers became increasingly popular among Pakistani buyers. Newer Chinese automakers also introduced more choices into the local automobile market.
Older Generation Remained on Sale in Pakistan
Another challenge was the difference between the Pakistani Picanto and models available internationally. Pakistan received a locally assembled version based on the second-generation Picanto.
That generation was originally introduced globally in 2011. By the time local sales began in 2019, Kia had already launched the third-generation model internationally.
The newer international version later received further styling and technology updates. Pakistani customers, however, continued to receive the older-generation vehicle.
What Happens to Existing Kia Picanto Owners?
The end of new bookings may raise questions for thousands of existing owners. However, discontinuation does not mean dealership support will immediately end.
Lucky Motor Corporation is expected to continue providing maintenance and spare-parts support through Kia’s nationwide network.
Existing owners can therefore continue using authorized service facilities for their vehicles. The Kia Picanto leaves Pakistan after a challenging six-year run in the country’s competitive hatchback market.
Despite attracting a niche audience, particularly for its automatic version, the car could not match established competitors.
