Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar has achieved a major milestone in its transplant services. The hospital successfully performed its first Kidney Transplant under the Sehat Card programme.

The procedure was the second kidney transplant performed at the hospital overall.

Under the programme, the patient received the expensive procedure without paying treatment costs. Essential medicines will also be provided free for one year.

Brother Donates Kidney to Patient

The donor was identified as 51-year-old Hazrat Ali from Charsadda. He donated one of his kidneys to his younger brother, Muhammad Ilyas.

Muhammad Ilyas is 40 years old and required the transplant for his treatment.

The Kidney Transplant was successfully performed by transplant surgeon Dr Shahid Khan and his specialist medical team.

The procedure marks an important development for patients requiring complex and costly medical treatment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Treatment Could Cost Around Rs2 Million Privately

According to the available details, similar treatment could cost around Rs2 million in the private healthcare sector.

However, the patient received the procedure free of charge through the Sehat Card programme.

Post-transplant care is also an important part of the treatment process. The patient will receive necessary medicines free for one year after the procedure.

This support could significantly reduce the financial burden associated with transplant treatment and follow-up care.

Transplant Centre Still Under Construction

The achievement is also significant because Khyber Teaching Hospital’s dedicated kidney transplant centre remains under construction.

Despite this, the hospital used its existing facilities and available resources to conduct the procedure.

The hospital administration credited the successful operation to cooperation between management, specialists and relevant departments.

The successful Kidney Transplant represents another step in expanding advanced medical services at the public hospital.

Sehat Card Supports Expensive Treatment

The hospital administration also acknowledged support from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and provincial health department.

Officials said the Sehat Card programme is helping eligible patients access expensive and complex healthcare services without direct treatment costs.

The latest procedure demonstrates how public healthcare facilities can provide advanced treatment using existing medical expertise and resources.
