KP Govt Waives Charges On Telecom Cables For 3 Years

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has announced a major relief for telecom operators by waiving charges for laying underground cable networks. The exemption will last for the next three years and is expected to improve internet connectivity across the province.

Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Science and Technology, Dr Shafqat Ayaz, said the decision aims to cut infrastructure costs and promote affordable, high-speed internet. He added that access to reliable services is critical for students, freelancers, and businesses, making this policy an important step toward a digital revolution in KP.

The government stressed that telecom cables play a central role in providing fast and stable internet connections. By reducing expenses on cable deployment, operators will be encouraged to expand their networks into more areas. This will benefit not only the youth, who depend on the internet for education and freelancing, but also institutions such as banks, hospitals, and businesses.

Dr Ayaz clarified that decisions regarding suspension or restoration of internet services remain under the jurisdiction of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), which operates under the federal government. However, he noted that the provincial government will continue to take every possible measure within its authority to improve digital access for citizens.

Previously, companies had to pay five rupees per meter to the National Highway Authority for laying telecom cables. Removing this fee, according to officials, is a significant step in lowering costs and supporting private investment in digital infrastructure.

The KP government emphasized that its top priority is to provide modern technology and digital facilities to every citizen. The new policy reflects its determination to make internet more affordable and accessible, helping the province move closer to a technology-driven economy.
