Lahore Airport Suspends Operations On Runways During Monsoon Hours

Lahore Airport Suspends Operations On Runways During Monsoon Hours

Lahoreโ€™s Allama Iqbal International Airport suspends operations on both of its runways for three hours each day as a precaution during the monsoon season. The temporary measure will remain in effect from July 5 to September 15.

According to the Pakistan Airports Authority, the airport suspends operations on both runways daily from 5:00 AM to 8:00 AM. The closure is expected to affect some early morning flights, while normal operations will continue during the rest of the day.

Officials said the decision has been taken to reduce the risk of bird strikes, which become more common during the monsoon season. Increased bird activity near airports can create safety concerns, especially during takeoff and landing.

The Pakistan Airports Authority explained that birds are more active at low altitudes below 3,000 feet during the rainy season. This increases the possibility of aircraft encountering birds shortly after takeoff or before landing.

A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has been issued to inform airlines and pilots about the temporary changes. The notice confirms that runways 36R/18L and 36L/18R will remain unavailable during the specified hours each day.

The airport suspends operations only during the early morning closure period. Flight services outside those hours will continue according to normal schedules.

Authorities clarified that emergency situations will be handled separately. If necessary, runway access may be granted based on the pilot’s judgment and operational requirements.

Airlines have also been instructed to make additional preparations during the monsoon period. Carriers are advised to ensure aircraft carry extra fuel in case flights experience delays or need to remain in holding patterns.

Pilots have been reminded to exercise extra caution during takeoff and landing. Weather conditions combined with increased bird activity require greater operational awareness.

The temporary runway closure is part of routine aviation safety measures taken during the rainy season. Aviation authorities regularly review operational risks and introduce preventive steps when needed.

Passengers traveling during the early morning hours are encouraged to check their flight status before leaving for the airport. Some departures and arrivals may be adjusted because of the scheduled runway closures.

Airport officials said the measure is designed to minimize safety risks rather than disrupt travel. They added that protecting passengers, crew members, and aircraft remains the highest priority.

The Pakistan Airports Authority will continue monitoring weather conditions and bird activity throughout the monsoon season. Any changes to the operational schedule will be communicated through official notices.

The period from July to September usually brings increased rainfall across Punjab, leading to changes in wildlife movement around airports. These seasonal conditions require additional precautions from aviation authorities.

As Lahore airport suspends operations on its runways during the designated hours, officials expect airlines and passengers to cooperate with the temporary arrangements. The precautionary measure aims to ensure safe flight operations throughout the monsoon season.
