As Eidul Azha approaches, residents of Lahore are grappling with sharp increases in the prices of perishable goods for the second consecutive week. Seasonal vegetables, fruits, and poultry items have seen significant hikes, with vendors largely ignoring official price lists issued by the district administration.
Despite the presence of fixed rate notifications, enforcement appears weak or absent, enabling shopkeepers to sell essential items at arbitrary rates. Citizens are voicing growing frustration over the absence of price control and the lack of intervention by elected representatives.

The price of live chicken rose by Rs18 per kg this week, officially set between Rs397 and Rs411. Yet, in markets, chicken meat is being sold for Rs580 to Rs760 per kg, while boneless chicken exceeds Rs1,000—well beyond regulated levels. Similarly, vegetables like potatoes, onions, and tomatoes are being sold at nearly double their official rates, with vendors mixing lower-grade produce and marketing it as premium.
Fruit prices have also surged, with apples priced officially at Rs220 to Rs365 per kg but sold for up to Rs800. Melons, watermelons, and lokat have seen increases of Rs5 to Rs15, with consumers paying far more than the stated prices.
The ongoing price manipulation has sparked concern across the city, with no meaningful action in sight. Without strict enforcement and regulatory oversight, the burden of inflation continues to fall on the public during a key festive season.
