The Punjab government has announced an ambitious plan to raise Lahore’s underground water level through sustainable measures aimed at combating the city’s growing water crisis.
According to officials, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) will lead the project, which includes installing rainwater harvesting systems, recharge wells, and improved urban drainage networks. These initiatives are designed to allow rainwater to seep back into the ground, replenishing the depleted aquifers.
Experts have long warned that Lahore’s underground water reserves are declining at an alarming rate due to over-extraction and rapid urbanization. In response, the government has prioritized groundwater recharge as part of its broader environmental and infrastructure reform agenda.
The project also involves collaboration with environmental organizations and local housing societies to ensure effective implementation. Authorities plan to monitor groundwater levels using digital meters and conduct quarterly evaluations to measure progress.
Punjab’s Chief Minister emphasized that restoring the underground water level in Lahore is essential for ensuring future water security. He added that sustainable management practices and public awareness campaigns will play a vital role in achieving this goal.
With this initiative, Lahore moves a step closer to addressing its water scarcity challenge through innovation, planning, and responsible resource use.
