LESCO Updates Billing Policy For Net-Metering Consumers

Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) has announced changes to its billing policy for net-metering consumers following instructions from the Ministry of Energy. The revision affects the export rates for solar energy units supplied back to the grid.

According to the new policy, the export rate for net-metering consumers has been reduced by 66 paisas per unit. Previously set at Rs. 25.98 per unit, the rate is now fixed at Rs. 25.32 per unit. The Lesco IT Directorate has issued an official notification confirming the updated rates and billing mechanism.

The new billing rules will take effect from the January 2026 billing cycle. Lesco clarified that export units exceeding the approved capacity will no longer be allowed. Any excess export will be restricted according to the DG-approved capacity limits.

The company emphasized that these changes align with Pakistanโ€™s revised net metering policy for solar energy consumers. The updated policy was developed after consultations with key stakeholders and approved by the Ministry of Energy. It aims to regulate solar energy exports while ensuring sustainable energy distribution and fair compensation for small-scale producers.

Officials noted that the revisions may slightly impact the monthly income of net-metering consumers. However, the government and Lesco aim to balance the interests of consumers, the energy sector, and the national grid. The new policy also encourages solar power adoption while maintaining system stability.

Energy experts said the move reflects ongoing efforts to standardize net metering practices across Pakistan. They advised consumers to carefully monitor their solar system output and ensure compliance with the approved capacity limits to avoid export restrictions.

With the revised billing policy, Lesco aims to streamline operations, improve grid management, and continue supporting the growth of renewable energy across the region. Net-metering consumers are encouraged to review their updated bills and contact Lesco for any clarifications regarding the new rates.
