Lahore High Court Chief Justice Aalia Neelum has imposed a Rs100,000 fine on a woman. The fine was issued over an unnecessary contempt petition and incorrect case details.
Chief Justice Aalia Neelum expressed displeasure during the hearing. She said the petitioner had wasted the court’s valuable time.
The court imposed the fines while hearing a petition filed by Ashba Kamran. The petition was directed against Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and other officials.
Additional Advocate General Muhammad Naveed Sheikh appeared for the Punjab government. Assistant Advocate General Waqas Umar also represented the provincial government.
Ashba Kamran appeared before the court in person. She questioned whether the Constitution and Supreme Court orders were binding on all citizens.
The petitioner also asked whether Supreme Court decisions applied only to ordinary citizens. She questioned whether such orders were equally binding on everyone.
Kamran claimed that paragraphs nine to 11 of a Supreme Court order remained unimplemented. She alleged that the court’s directions were being ignored.
During her arguments, she referred to former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani. She said Gilani had been removed after failing to comply with a court order.
The chief justice then reminded Kamran about the nature of her case. She asked the petitioner to provide the number of the petition behind her contempt application.
Justice Aalia Neelum also questioned whether the petition number mentioned in the application was accurate. Kamran could not provide a satisfactory explanation for the error.
The chief justice subsequently imposed a Rs100,000 fine on the petitioner. She cited the incorrect petition number and the time spent on the matter.
The court also directed that the case would proceed after payment of the fine. The hearing was therefore linked to compliance with the court’s order.
The fines were imposed during proceedings involving several senior Punjab officials. The respondents named in the petition include the Punjab chief minister.
The Punjab chief secretary was also named as a respondent. The speaker of the Punjab Assembly was included in the petition as well.
The case involved allegations concerning compliance with Supreme Court directions. However, the immediate issue before the Lahore High Court concerned the contempt application.
The court questioned the accuracy of the information provided by the petitioner. The incorrect petition number became a central issue during the hearing.
Chief Justice Aalia Neelum stated that court time should not be wasted. The fine followed her criticism of the manner in which the application was filed.
