LHC Orders Smooth Traffic Flow: ‘No Traffic Blockage for Even 5 Minutes’

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued strict directives to ensure smooth traffic flow across the city, emphasizing that no traffic blockage will be tolerated for even five minutes. The order came during a hearing on growing public complaints about frequent traffic jams caused by VIP movements, construction work, and poor traffic management.

Justice Shahid Karim, while hearing the case, remarked that citizens have a right to free movement and cannot be held hostage to poor planning or administrative negligence. He warned relevant authorities, including the Traffic Police and Lahore Development Authority (LDA), to take immediate action to improve road conditions and prevent unnecessary blockades.

The court also sought a detailed report on steps taken to manage traffic during peak hours and ensure better coordination between city departments. Justice Karim stated that both daily commuters and emergency services suffer due to prolonged road closures, which reflects a failure in urban management.

Officials from the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) and traffic police assured the court that they were implementing a new digital monitoring system to identify and address congestion in real time. The system will use surveillance cameras to monitor traffic density and alert on-ground officers to clear bottlenecks quickly.

The LHC’s order also addressed public inconvenience caused by political rallies and construction projects, directing that alternative routes must always be provided to minimize disruptions.

Citizens welcomed the court’s intervention, calling it a much-needed step to restore order on Lahore’s increasingly congested roads. Traffic experts believe the enforcement of this order could significantly reduce delays and improve mobility across the city.
