The Lahore High Court (LHC summons) reports from the Home Secretary Punjab and CCPO while hearing a petition concerning deaths and injuries during Basant celebrations.
A bench of the court, led by Justice Awais Khalid, heard the petition filed by Azhar Siddique Advocate. The petition highlighted that six deaths and over 100 injuries occurred during the Basant festival, contradicting government claims of safe festivities.
The petitioner argued, โBasant has become a life-threatening danger instead of a festival. Dozens of children were injured from falling off rooftops.โ He urged the court to hold officials accountable for negligence.
During the hearing, the LHC summons emphasized the need for accurate reporting on the festivalโs incidents and requested detailed information from relevant authorities. The court adjourned further proceedings until February 17.
Earlier, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz praised the security arrangements and citizen cooperation during Basant 2026. She confirmed that despite the three-day celebrations, restrictions on kite flying would remain, instructing officials to strictly enforce safety protocols.
The Basant Festival was officially celebrated for the first time in 25 years, from February 6 to 8, under the Punjab Regulation of Kite Flying Act 2025. Authorities had implemented strict SOPs to ensure public safety.
Officials will now submit their reports following the LHC summons, detailing deaths, injuries, and safety measures during the event. The court will examine whether negligence occurred and if responsible individuals should face accountability.
The festival drew widespread attention, with citizens enjoying the vibrant colours and cultural activities, but the high number of casualties underscores concerns about safety enforcement.
With the upcoming hearing on February 17, the Lahore High Court is expected to review submitted reports and decide further legal action to ensure safety and responsibility in future Basant celebrations.
