A major fire broke out at Gul Plaza on Monday around 3 PM, prompting an immediate response from rescue teams. The fire was doused after several hours of intensive efforts by Rescue 1122, WASA, and Bahria Fire Services.
Over 80 personnel and 21 emergency vehicles were deployed to tackle the blaze. More than 400,000 litres of water, supplemented with firefighting foam, were used. Fortunately, no casualties were reported during the incident.
Officials said the fire caused structural cracks in the building, raising concerns about a potential collapse. Authorities emphasized that the area was secured to prevent further risks.
The blaze at Gul Plaza was described as the largest and most dangerous fire incident in Karachi so far this year. During January, Karachi witnessed at least 225 fire incidents, according to the Fire Brigade report.
The report noted that 83 people lost their lives in various fire-related incidents across the city, including two children and eight women. Additionally, 24 individuals, including a child, were injured in separate incidents.
District-wise data revealed that Karachi Central recorded the highest number of fires, with 30 incidents. Saddar and Sohrab Goth each reported 18 fires, while Gulistan-e-Mustafa also registered 18 cases. Other areas affected included Nazimabad with 13 fires, Lyari with nine, and the SITE industrial area with 11. Korangi recorded nine incidents, and Landhi saw three.
Orangi Town and Shah Faisal Colony each experienced eight fire incidents, while Manzoor Colony reported 14. New Karachi Fire Station jurisdiction accounted for 13 fires.
Fire officials confirmed that the rapid deployment of resources ensured the fire was doused efficiently. They highlighted the importance of public awareness and timely reporting to prevent major losses. The successful operation at Gul Plaza demonstrates the effectiveness of Karachi’s emergency response teams in handling large-scale fire emergencies.
