Karachi Admin forms nine member committee to care for elephant Noor Jehan

KARACHI: Karachi Administrator Dr. Syed Saifur Rahman formed a nine-member committee on Monday to care for the ailing elephant Noor Jehan at Karachi Zoo.

Dr. Amir Khalil, Director of Reveal and Response at Four Paws International, and Dr. Marina Ivanova, Senior Veterinarian at the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Germany, serve on the committee. Dr Frank Goritz, Head of the Institute of Wildlife and Zoo Research from Germany, Dr Thomas Hilderbrandt and former Senior Director Karachi Zoo Dr Mansoor Qazi, Dr Imran Rasheed, Associate Professor, Department of Parasitology, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore, Dr Isma Gheewala of Animal Care Centre Karachi, Dr Amir Rizvi, Member of Zoo Expert Panel for Zoo and Safari Park Dr Kazim Hussain.

Members of the KMC-nominated committee will make suggestions and recommendations to the administrator on the ailing elephant’s well-being and welfare, including treatment and the provision of a natural environment for practical measures.

Dr. Syed Saifur Rahman stated that the KMC appreciates all efforts made for the welfare of animals.

KMC is making every effort to ensure Noor Jehan’s quick recovery, as well as maintaining constant video link communication with Four Paws, an international animal welfare organisation, and treating the elephant in accordance with their instructions.

He stated that the Four Paws team, led by Dr. Amir Khalil, operated on the elephant at the KMC’s request a week ago and recommended medicines and recovery measures, which were fully implemented.

The committee formed to make the efforts for Noor Jehan’s recovery more effective and better includes Dr Amir Khalil from Four Paws International Austria, Dr Marina Ivanova, Dr Frank Goritz, and Dr Thomas Hilderbrandt from Germany.

The administrator stated that KMC is taking steps to ensure the well-being and health of all the animals at the zoo, and that they are making every effort in this regard.
