Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed deputy commissioners (DCs) across the province to visit universities and colleges and brief students about government development projects and public welfare initiatives.

The instructions were issued during a meeting held in Lahore on Thursday to review the performance of district administrations and assess the delivery of public services.

Under the new initiative, deputy commissioners will visit educational institutions in their respective districts and provide students with information about ongoing development schemes and government programmes.

The move aims to strengthen communication between district administrations and young people while increasing awareness of provincial government initiatives.

Maryam Nawaz also instructed every district administration to prepare a District Economic Plan to identify local development opportunities and encourage business activities.

During the meeting, she ordered strict action against crop residue burning and warned officials in Okara and other affected districts over their failure to prevent the practice.

The chief minister also expressed dissatisfaction with delays and substandard work on beautification projects, directing officials to prioritise quality, sustainability and timely completion.

For road maintenance, she ordered the formation of dedicated teams to inspect public infrastructure and ensure corrective measures within 12 hours.

District administrations were also directed to keep streetlights operational, cover open manholes and improve road markings, including zebra crossings. Special attention was ordered for safety arrangements around schools.

The chief minister gave deputy commissioners three days to improve conditions at government hospitals. DCs and assistant commissioners were instructed to visit healthcare facilities regularly and monitor cleanliness and maintenance.

She also ordered daily deep cleaning of public hospitals to improve facilities for patients and visitors.

Assistant commissioners were directed to restore non-functional water filtration plants and ensure proper maintenance of public transport facilities.

The instructions also covered general bus terminals and Green Bus shelters, where authorities were asked to improve cleanliness, repairs and overall maintenance.

Maryam Nawaz further ordered a province-wide operation against illegal encroachments and directed officials to remove wall chalking, torn banners and unwanted advertising material from public spaces.

The meeting also discussed measures to control the stray dog population and reviewed the performance of district administrations in areas including healthcare, education, road safety, cleanliness and public facilities.

The chief minister appreciated the performance of district administrations in Murree, Gujranwala, Attock, Bahawalpur, Chakwal, Jhelum, Layyah and Sahiwal.
