Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Monday officially launched the Punjab Enforcement Regulatory Authority (PERA), a new government body designed to curb inflation, illegal encroachments, hoarding, and profiteering across the province. Describing PERA as a ‘symbol of terror’ for lawbreakers, Maryam Nawaz said the authority would act as the government’s primary tool to enforce law and order, and ensure price control.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Lahore, the Chief Minister highlighted that PERA had become fully operational in just eight months, with a trained workforce of around 8,500 personnel set to begin duties from the Lahore division next week. She praised the leadership of retired Captain Farrukh Atiq, the authority’s Director General, for his professional and swift efforts in bringing the vision to life.

Maryam Nawaz explained that PERA officials would act as a firm barrier against illegal occupations and unfair business practices, while also providing hope and protection to the oppressed public. She noted that the creation of PERA was necessary because the previous price control system was ineffective and marred by corruption, with magistrates collecting bribes instead of enforcing the law.

The CM also shared how the authority had already carried out operations against illegal encroachments, improving public safety—especially for women—and easing congestion in urban markets. She mentioned positive feedback from women and traders who have noticed safer streets and better business conditions.

In a strong message, Maryam Nawaz stressed that no one is above the law, citing a recent incident where her own son was fined by the police without any special treatment. She reaffirmed her government’s commitment to equal justice, crackdown on corruption, and dismantling of land mafias, stating that bigger violators would face stronger action by PERA.

Maryam Nawaz called PERA not just a force but a movement for change, particularly led by the youth, emphasizing the importance of shifting outdated mindsets that perceive law as only for the weak. She thanked Punjab’s Inspector General of Police, Dr. Usman Anwar, for his support, and revealed that billions of rupees had been invested in establishing PERA as a key pillar of governance.

Concluding her remarks, the Chief Minister reiterated her dedication to serving the people of Punjab by ensuring laws are not only made but also properly enforced, promising continued efforts to curb inflation and protect citizens.
