Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has written to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, asking for urgent steps to support potato farmers. She called for faster exports and lower shipping costs to improve farmers’ incomes.
In her letter, Maryam Nawaz highlighted the problems faced by growers due to slow exports and high transport charges. She said farmers are struggling to sell their produce at fair prices. According to her, quick government action can reduce losses and stabilize the market.
Maryam Nawaz urged the federal government to use the National Logistics Corporation to speed up potato shipments. She also requested the removal of export barriers that delay consignments at different stages. These delays, she noted, increase costs and reduce profits for farmers.
The chief minister proposed a 25 percent special reduction in freight charges. She said this step would make Pakistani potatoes more competitive in global markets. She also asked for simpler procedures to help exporters complete shipments faster.
Maryam Nawaz stressed the importance of entering new markets, including the European Union, Africa, and the United States. She said expanding exports to these regions could increase foreign exchange earnings. It would also improve the overall agriculture sector.
In the letter, she explained that farmers are under financial pressure due to rising costs. She said better export policies would help them earn more and plan future crops with confidence. She added that the agriculture sector needs strong support to remain stable.
Officials believe that higher exports could reduce surplus supply in local markets. This would help maintain better prices for farmers. It could also strengthen Pakistan’s position in the global potato trade.
