Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif met award-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy in Lahore to discuss plans for promoting film and culture. Both sides agreed to work together to support media development in the province.
During the meeting, the chief minister praised Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy for her achievements in documentary filmmaking. She highlighted her role in raising awareness about social issues through her work. Maryam Nawaz also appreciated her contribution to art, culture, and journalism.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy thanked the chief minister for her efforts in promoting cultural activities. She described Maryam Nawaz’s leadership as positive and said her work is being appreciated beyond Punjab. According to her, people in Karachi are also recognizing these efforts.
A key topic of discussion was the Punjab Film City project. Both sides agreed to cooperate on developing this major initiative. The project is planned as a modern hub for film, television, and digital media production.
Maryam Nawaz said the Punjab Film City will be Pakistan’s first complete media production center. It will include studios, sound stages, and post-production facilities. Visual effects labs and shooting locations will also be part of the project.
The plan also includes building a convention hall and a media trade hub. These facilities aim to support business activity in the creative sector. A film and music school will also be established to train young talent.
In addition, the chief minister directed authorities to restore Minar-e-Pakistan and the Digital History Museum. This step is part of wider efforts to preserve historical and cultural sites.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy also praised the revival of the Basant Festival. She said the return of the festival is a positive step for cultural promotion. She added that international personalities have shown interest in attending future events.
The filmmaker also appreciated the revival of horse and cattle shows. She said such events provide entertainment and strengthen community engagement.
Officials believe these initiatives will help build a strong creative economy in Punjab. The Punjab Film City project is expected to create opportunities for filmmakers, artists, and media professionals.
